Hi

Everyone!

The orchids in this picture are those that were in our 'Outrageous' flower show last May.

Supplied by the Pinelands Orchid Society, the same people that are hosting an Annual Orchid Auction. The auction will be:

Next Tues., May 5th - 7:30pm until sold - out! At 1 Medford Leas Way, Medford Leas

If you have any questions about the auction you may contact our new friend and orchid expert Christine Jacoby. Who incidentally presented a great program at our meeting last week in case you missed it. Many people requested her email, so here it is: roji@comcast.net

I'm sure Christine will be there and she might have some of her beautiful hand made orchid pots for sale. But I'm not sure about the pots. If you are interested in buying one or two of her pots, I'd call her and ask her if they will be for sale. Her number is 609-220-3210.

Speaking of auctions, did you know Millea Brothers Ltd. is handling the auction of the contents of the Doris Duke House? The same house we toured May of 2007. The auction is This Sat. and Sun. May 2nd and 3rd at the Morristown Armory, Morristown NJ. The sale benefits the Duke Foundation. We were lucky to get in to see the house. I believe everything in it is to be sold, and it will never be open to the public again.

I would love to go to that auction. I definitely can't on Sat. but maybe Sun. It's a long shot...but maybe. Anyway, for more information, here is the Millea Brother's website: www.milleabrothers.com or you can all at973-377-1500.

Don't forget tomorrow is the Parking Lot Spring Clean-up!

------ 9:00am ------

Please try to go and lend a hand.

And if you do don't for get your gloves, a rake, broom, pruners, clippers, shovel, spade, and anything else you can envision using to tidyup a plot or two.

Thank You!

Greetings!

If you are reading this most likely you have already heard about the Sally Friedman article in the New York Times. It's funny, but I just happened to run into Sally yesterday (after not seeing her since last May) and she excitedly told me about the article, but she didn't say she mentioned our club in it. What a pleasant surprise! So many GCNJ clubs are in North Jersey and I know a lot of members up there read the NYTimes. There were also several gardening articles related to the annual Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program where 19 outstanding private gardens in North Jersey are open to the public for charity. So I know this particular issue will be well read by northern gardeners. This is really good publicity for our club and town on the state level!
Here is the article in case you missed it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/26/nyregion/new-jersey/26Rgen.html

Next year, our theme is going to be 'In Our Own Backyard.'
I felt that this theme relates not only to our own homes, but the Community House, our town, Burlington County, and even surrounding parts of our state. So with this theme in mind, Mary Jane is busy preparing programs for the upcoming year. She was considering hiring a very good, garden photographer from PA that we read about in the Inquire, but we (and many others) were so impressed Jen Bulava's (the girl who came to talk about the Burl. Cty. Park system) photography skills, we decided to ask her to come back next year to give us some pointers on photographing our gardens and flowers. We thought, "Why not use someone from our own backyard?"
Jen is a lovely girl and professional photographer with her own web site. To see a preview of her work, check out the link below:
http://www.naturephotostore.net/

Her pictures are beautiful and you can order prints from her site. I particularly loved the Four Seasons photos she took at Smithville. We will have some for sale and/or raffle at a meeting next winter. But if you can't wait - consider ordering some, her prices are very reasonable.

Hi and welcome to summer!

The photos above are of the woods on McElwee Rd. planted by our 'President's Award for Outstanding Garden,' winner for April. Unfortunately, most of the daffodils are spent now, and after the heat of this weekend, they'll be just a beautiful memory.
But next year, it will be worth a drive by to see them.
By the way......McElwee is located off of Hartford and is a good road to take over to Creek Rd. on the way to the Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area, where there will be a FREE Spring Nature Program. The program is called Birding at Boundary Creek and will be held three times in May.... Tues. the 5th, from 9am to 11am, Saturday May 2 at 9am, and Saturday, May 30 at 8am. Boundary Creek is a natural bird magnet. The guide will explore the fields, forests, and wetlands for the many birds that use this important habitat. Take binoculars, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED - 609-265-5068.
It really is a lovely spot with a human sun dial and an extensive boardwalk to the edge of the Rancocas Creek where lookout spots afford a great view of the water and wetlands. We're lucky to have this park in Moorestown. Check it out.
Fondly, Jolee

Welcome Moorestown Garden Club Members!

In an attempt to keep our members up to date with the most current information that might be of interest, I have decided to try a Blog format. I am new at this so please bear with me. I am learning as I go along. I will try to update when I have information or musings to share with you. I have no idea how often that will be, but I would like to encourage you to check in periodically for news and bits of information that I think should be related. Of course if there is something of importance that everyone should be made aware, I will send out personal emails.

A really cool feature of this blog is the ability to post pictures, and as soon as I figure out how to do that I will. I have some beautiful springtime shots of Carmen's back yard. (I'm not going to use any one's last name on this site because I'm pretty sure it can be accessed by others on the web. I will however, use an initial along with a first name if we have two or more members with the same name.) I receive so much info from Carmen that she should have her own little place on this blog, maybe called 'Carmen's Corner.'
Anyway, this is a wonderful site by professional photographer, Amy Suttyn that Carmen told me about:

http://www.sutryn.com/flowershow.html

If you click on it you will be able to see Amy's pictures of the Phila. Flower Show. Almost every arrangement in the design classes is there. Not to mention archives of past shows.

Carmen and I are going to continue to award certificates of recognition to noteworthy front or side yard gardens in town again this year. Look for the recipients in the Sun. The Garden Club of NJ calls this award the 'Random Act of Beauty Award,' but we (Carmen and I) don't like that name. There is nothing "random" about all of the work and dedication it takes to plant and maintain a beautiful garden, so we call it:
"The Moorestown Garden Club's
President's Award for Outstanding Garden."
Quite a mouthful I know, but we like it better.
The recipient of this month's award is going to a lovely couple on McElwee Rd. They have planted hundreds (which have turned into thousands) of daffodils in their woods right along the side of the road. I have some pictures of their property, but they are on my other computer and I'm afraid if change computers I won't be able to go back to this and add the pictures. I promise I will figure it out though. Hopefully for the next post.

Today is Arbor Day and Monica A. and Sandy D. organized a lovely ceremony at the Middle School. A special thank-you goes to Monica. The wonderful job she did is a true testament to her, especially considering she was a new member last May and she will be leaving us this June. The last couple of weeks while she was diligently working on Arbor Day she was also preparing and then showing her house for sale. It was a lot of work, the least of which was leaving the house with her three dogs, a Mastiff, a Golden doodle and a mini Poodle, every time a realtor wanted to show her house. Luckily, she had many offers and sold her house within the first week! The week before Arbor Day! Anyway, it's a great loss for our club, but I'm sure she and her family will be happy in North Carolina where her husband's job is taking them.

I'm going to try and post this now so we'll see what happens.

Wish me luck!

Jolee
